Keep Your Childlike Sense of Imagination and Wonder
Let’s take a look at difficulties that people have with that. I’m sure that somewhere in Christianity it says something like — “come to me as a little child” and I know that in Buddhism it says something like “come to each moment with new eyes” meaning the same. It has been said over and over ad infinitum that innocence is required to find what it is we are always chasing after. Why whywhywhywhy don’t we take a moment to listen. Listen, not go read another best seller about it. Not go read something obscure about it either and not ask questions about it, form theories around it and discuss it endlessly. New eyes. Think of the eyes of babies — wonder filled eyes. Think about that for a moment then imagine forcing those innocent eyes to read a book about wonder filled eyes. OH, we say, You have wonder filled eyes! I just read a book about that! You’ve got to read it!
This happens to me all the time! I give someone a Reiki treatment and we talk and they say, “OH! You sound just like so and so whose book I just read, you’ve got to read it!” HUH? I just said it from my own heart, why do I have to read it. I said it from an innocent point of wonder, why would I want to kill it? Do you see what I’m saying here? People come across something real and alive and breathing and they IMMEDIATELY have to make it a second hand experience. Tear the wings off and stick a pin through it and analyze its parts to understand it — to “know” it.
My father had a habit of going to places of wonder, let’s say the Grand Canyon, and before he had even walked the 10 feet from the car to the edge of the overlook he would say something like, “you know, this reminds me of …..” and go on to tell a story about some other place and time. He just couldn’t seem to be where he was when he was there! If this seems strange just cast a thought to the last time you were with someone and heard something like this. “That is soooo profound!!! I just saw ____ (fill in blank with movie title) and…” and they actually continue on to tell you who played what part in the movie and the plot, blow by blow if you let them.
So here we are, generally living second hand lives as if it were normal. Well, it is normal, but never equate normal with real or healthy or the way it is meant to be. When we do have an honest to god first hand experience the first thing most do is look for parallels in a book or movie to prove to themselves that while it may not be normal it is at least known. Soon the real moment has passed into obscurity and they start to doubt their experience.
Innocence is to be empty of preconceptions. Emptying ourselves of preconceptions is at first tricky and generally brief. Our lives have been programmed about reality since day one. The program is made up of the “truth of the day reality” in whatever time and place we are born to. I don’t see any of us escaping what is all around us any time soon. We are but the fish swimming in the waters of our culture. While individually some of us may burst out for moments or even enjoy some level of freedom from it, we are still not only in it but OF it. How could we possibly KNOW anything about all that is? Those of us who do venture out of the bounds though, can glimpse and encourage others to glimpse the wonder of not knowing ANYTHING about reality. ALL NEW, all fresh, all alive. This IS the news.
So if you think you know ANYTHING best drop it and see what your cup gets filled with if you empty it. You really don’t have a clue what will happen from one moment to the next unless you are creating more of the same. Yes, maybe you did get the worlds grandest epiphany yesterday! Wonderful! I’m happy for you. It’s always fun when that happens. Today though is a whole new thing. Empty the cup and see what it becomes filled with today!
